The domain of law firm consulting can be
exceptionally broad to say the least.
At a minimum, law firm consulting

So how do you
decide what you need – or if you need legal consultants at all?
Read on for the solution.
The 3 Key Roles in
Successful Law Practice Management
First I recommend you read the book E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. This book was originally published
about 20 years ago, and has sold hundreds of thousands of copies to date.
The key concept from the book for this conversation on law firm consulting
would be the idea of the roles of:
the technician
● the manager ●
the entrepreneur
You see, every business must have all
three roles present to sustain itself or grow. If it is missing one of
these roles, or if the people holding these roles are in conflict, the
business is unlikely to thrive and grow. In fact it could falter and fail.
Each one of these roles has different
thoughts, beliefs, priorities, fears and agendas. Each is essential
to the success of any business.
That said,
the role of the technician is not the role that primarily systematizes and
grows the business. It is the role of the manager and the entrepreneur
that primarily causes efficiency and growth.
| To the extent you
have present in your law firm the roles of:
The Manager (staff
managers and partners) and The Entrepreneur (equity
partners that hold the vision, mission, and goal of the
practice)…
you
will increase your revenue, reduce your work hours,
and have more control and less stress for everyone
in the firm.

This section reminds me of another quote:
"A
man to carry on a successful business must have imagination.
He must see things as in a vision, a dream of the whole thing."

Legal Consultants
Bring the Needed Expertise
In most firms of any size it is difficult
to presence all three roles, since most people are technicians by
mind set and training. Thus the need for law firm consulting.
Law school or paralegal school did not
teach you business skills, and probably did not attract the personality
type that is lured to managerial and entrepreneurial work. You probably
did not get a business and/or a psychology degree.
In solo and small firms it is
particularly difficult to presence the Manager and the Entrepreneur since
there is so much pressure to just do it, do it, and do it - which
is the role of the technician. In solo firms, it is worse since the solo
must wear all three hats at the same time.
Clearly you can see that applying law
firm consulting for the needed expertise is a no-brainer. There are
two things you need to do before selecting a law firm consulting vendor:
