What are the things you need to consider in
marketing for law firms and selecting legal consultants?
For the first step in marketing for law
firms, you need to know where you are right now. Only then can you
determine where you need to go and what and who to use to get
there.
There needs
to be some form of assessment often known in business development circles
as a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats)
analysis and/or what I term an Attorney Practice Assessment™.
(Get all the facts about the process of Attorney
Practice Assessment™.)
Find Out Where You
Are
You need to thoroughly assess the
"problem space" before you can go on to figuring out the
"solution space."
The process that works is "ready
– aim – fire" not "aim and fire" - so we
need first to focus on "ready" in marketing for law firms. I am
sure people in your firm have plenty of opinions and good ideas; however,
let's get some objective "data" first.
This "ready" and
"data" process can be done quite easily. You'll use a couple of
tools and an hour or so on the telephone, debriefing with an objective and
experienced legal consultant. Your discussion will center on the data
collected on marketing for law firms.
There is no reason this process of
finding out where you are now should cost more than several hundred
dollars at most for a small firm. For a solo or larger firm, think $175
per attorney assessed. Usually you only need to do the partner level
- and often just key partners, not all the partners.

You should also expect to get tips,
techniques and solutions from this "ready" and "data"
process that you can put to use right away, even if you never work
with that legal consultant again.
This small investment in data collection
and getting ready will save you thousands or even tens of
thousands of dollars. It will also help you spend the least amount of
time in marketing, and get maximum results in terms of new revenue down
the road.
You'll
benefit from the tool I use for this process; I call it the Attorney
Practice Assessment™.
Add it to your business development arsenal. Many attorneys have told me
that just reviewing this powerful tool without talking with me made
a positive difference for them.
Find Out Who You
Are
An interesting business quote would be
helpful here:
"Being
good in business is the most fascinating kind of art."
– Andy Warhol
Of course, being good in business is not
just art. It is also part science.
| In marketing for law
firms, you will most likely want to use some psychological tools
as well. With these tools, you'll assess your personal profile and
probably the personal profiles of your team.
Here's why: An important part of
success in any practice is assessing strengths so we can focus on using
people inside their strengths instead of their weaknesses.
|
A personal profile instrument can give
you an objective and scientific point of view. This is a huge advantage
both for you and others.
You will see
deeper levels, as well as increase your own and your team's
"Emotional Intelligence" - a critical factor for success.
Create An
Environment Of Success
One of the best personal profile tools is
the DISC, which has a 30-year plus track record in business
settings. It is particularly useful in client service and sales
settings which both have a lot to do with marketing for law firms.
Over 40 million people in 50 countries have used the DISC to help them
understand themselves and others better.
Imagine giving you and your team a simple
framework for looking at human behavior, while helping yourself to create
an environment of success.
The DISC is NOT a clinical psychology
tool. Instead it is designed for normal populations. This tool also has
the advantage of being quite affordable compared to other similar tools in
the marketplace - with science as good as or superior to others on the
market.
Consider about $50 for each person for
this tool at most, with $25 to $35 each being not uncommon pricing for
this tool.
